The story of Lake Taupo’s Mine Bay Māori rock carvings is the latest in the series “Stories of Aotearoa,” produced for Tourism New Zealand. Thousands of international visitors from around the world make the journey to Lake Taupo to view the iconic Mine Bay Māori rock carvings but amazingly few people know the story of their creation or the meaning behind the art work. Forty years after their creation, we collaborated with master carver Matahi Whakataka Brightwell to tell the story of the carvings that carry a remarkable heritage that reaches back 27 generations.
